Santa Monica and Venice Beach were on our California To Do List as they’re so iconic to LA. Back on our first day, we made it down to Santa Monica to check out the Pier, explore Venice Beach Boardwalk and find one of the shops on the Boyfriend’s list. Let’s just say that all we (he) knew was that it was “near” Venice Beach.
We parked up on Santa Monica Pier and headed over to Venice. We explored the boardwalk and all of the quirky sellers, watched the skateboarders at the skate park and then headed up in the direction of the surf shops. After getting general directions for the shop (Deus Ex Machina if anyone’s interested), we walked… and walked… and walked… until the point where data roaming had to be switched on to make sure we weren’t lost! We carried on walking only to find that the shop was closed when we got there! (Insert screaming face emoji! 😱)
We obviously had to come back the next day… (!) this time, thankfully in the car!
We ended up walking a 12 mile round trip back to Santa Monica, but we did end up finding Abbot Kinney, a boulevard of cool shops, cafes and the best Lemonade I’ve ever had. I have actually been dreaming about it since we’ve been back! If you ever make it there, go for the cucumber and mint one, it wins hands down. I also found a shop selling American Milk Glass cake stands, half price, which the shop packed up for me ready to take as a carry-on onto the plane! So I guess achey legs and sunburnt arms paid off in the end… ;-)
Once we made it back to the Pier, we checked out the arcade. As soon as I spotted Zoltar, I had to get my fortune read so I paid my one dollar and awaited my fate! The memories of the film Big instantly came flooding back! The Pier was busy full of tourists and locals alike, listening to live music performers, eating an array of sugary treats and then spending a few dollars on arcade games and rides.
It was an eventful day and although we walked for miles, it was fun to take in everything and even stumble on parts of LA that we probably would never have found otherwise… so y’know, I forgave him in the end! ;-)
