I think I’m not the only one who totally LOVES The Great British Bake Off. I was literally counting down the days until Mel, Sue, Paul, Mary and 12 new bakers were back on my TV screen. You might already be aware that I love to bake anyway and watching GBBO just makes me want to get that oven on and whisk up some delicious bake even more. And don’t even get me started on pining for those pastel coloured Kitchen Aids…
So in honour of The Great British Bake Off, I have set myself a little challenge. Every week, I’m going to try and bake something off of the latest GBBO episode. Today, I attempted Diana’s Lemon Curd Swiss Roll and so in true Bake Off style, here we go… Ready, Set, BAKE!
Ok, I have a little confession to make… This was my second attempt at the sponge. The recipe does not tell you to pre-roll the sponge when it’s still warm to stop it from cracking. You may remember Martha mentioning it on Wednesday’s episode. So of course, it cracked. As the sponge only takes about 10 minutes to bake, I decided to do it again. This time, as soon as I took it out of the oven, I laid the sponge onto a damp tea towel covered in grease proof paper and sugar and rolled it up in the paper and left it to cool. This is the way to go! After it had cooled, I unrolled it and spread the inside with lemon curd and taking Mary’s advice, I added whipped cream too. So here you have it, my first Bake Off challenge! It didn’t turn out too bad in the end… but I don’t think I’d be very good under pressure in the tent! ;-)
Paul’s (the Boy’s, not Hollywood’s ;-)) verdict:
“Two pieces in the space of 10 minutes of it being finished say’s it’s a pretty good swiss roll! Ooh lemony goodness!”
I promise I didn’t pay him to say that! Well, maybe in swiss roll! ;-)
What’s your verdict?
