Things have been a bit quiet on Almost Apricot for a few weeks due to moving house and no internet, but everything is back on track now! Speaking of houses and furniture, two weekends ago, I was invited to The Old School Club to take part in #UpcycleWithCurrys – to upcycle a used washing machine drum into a piece of furniture or homeware. The options we could make were: a side table, a lamp shade, a footstool, a shelf or a decorative storage box. Since I was moving, I chose the side table as I thought it would fit quite nicely into my new house…

Once everything was explained, we couldn’t wait to get started and pick our projects. After a quick look around at the materials available and a sketch of what we wanted our projects to look like, my table group and I spent most of the afternoon in the workshop next door drilling holes for castors and figuring out how to attach our table tops.

I picked a nice bit of round slate (a pizza plate I believe!) and set about trying to find ways of attaching it. I picked quite a tall washing machine drum with a high opening so it proved quite tricky at first, but with the help of Inma who runs The Old School Club, we managed to find a solution! I stuck my slate onto a corner shelf which was cut to size and then fixed to my drum by a long screw. It means that my top slides on and off so I can use my side table as storage too!

I didn’t have enough time to paint my table at the event, so I waited until I got home. I decided on Dove Pale Grey for the main body and a bit of metallic on the top as it matches my home decor. I decided to keep the wood natural to give it a contrast against the slate and here’s my final finished table! Something a little bit different and definitely a talking point for anyone visiting my house…

Thanks Joes Bloggers for the invite and Currys for putting the event on. It’s definitely making me want to get on with a few more DIY’s for my new place! Maybe it will inspire you to give some upcycling a try too?

Looks really good with it painted. Love the metalic top! Mine is a little too high for a foot stall but works well as a seat. Lovely to see you! x
