I’ve heard about Columbia Road Flower Market for years, but living west, getting up early on a Sunday morning to beat the crowds was always a little too much effort. Until the other Sunday (when the weather was A LOT better…) I decided it was time to check it out as well as the famous Lily Vanilli Bakery, also only open on a Sunday. I’ve definitely been missing out!
The flower market stalls sell all kinds of flowers and plants, there is an endless amount to choose from. It’s hard to resist all of the beautiful colours, I could have spent a fortune, but in the end I went for a country flower mix that you can leave to dry. I’ve had them for a couple of weeks and they are still as brightly coloured as when I first bought them!
We found the Lily Vanilli Bakery at the end of a little alleyway down a side road off Columbia Road. Since I got the Sweet Tooth recipe book for Christmas, I’ve wanted to sample the cakes and after seeing the website, the Boy couldn’t wait to get his paws on one of the sausage rolls. They were unlike any sausage roll I’ve ever had before, homemade and full of meat. Pretty sure it was mega calorific, but good nonetheless! We also couldn’t resist something sweet, opting for an apricot and lavender friand each.
As well as all of the flower stalls, there are lots of shops, little cafes and art galleries on and around Columbia Road, so spending a Sunday around there is easy. You might also catch a performance by a vintage trio if you’re lucky!
Getting up early wasn’t too bad after all… it made the day feel so much longer! Might have to do it a little more often! ;-)
